Flowers on a Stone

In Memory of My Cousin Donald

Thoughts of him came to me
as I stood alone in the rain
his curly hair, gentle stare
and that smile that stood out plain.
I wanted to hear his voice singing
pure with his guitar.
A lullaby of forgotten times from
a far away shooting star.

The pain was rough and demanding
with sorrow I felt alone as
I went to visit my cousin
by placing flowers on a stone.
It hurts too much to go there.
It reminds me of the truth that
some don't make it to old age
they leave us in their youth.

He left us so long ago.
His memory a ghost to remain
in the hearts of all his loved
ones who deal with the hurt
and pain.
I thought about his story
when he was alive and walking
this earth.

He was such a very good guy
straight on through since birth
that thought hit me so clearly
with pain right to the bone
as I turned and left the graveyard
and those flowers on a stone.
